Are you looking to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of your fresh flowers? Follow these tips any time of year to get the most out of a bouquet.
If you brought home flowers or had some delivered, the first step is to remove it from plastic if it came in any. This can cause moisture and mold to build upon the stems and blooms.
Next, you’ll want to find the perfect place for your bouquet. Try to keep them away from any drafts and extreme temperatures as it can dry the flowers out and cause wilting. Avoid placing the flowers on any windowsills and other locations with full sun – flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
If you have any fruit, it is suggested to keep the flowers away from it because the ethylene gas is detrimental to many types of flowers.
Here are the top four tips for keep flowers looking their best.
1. Cut the stems: before you put the bouquet in water, trim 1-2 inches off the end of each stem with a pair of garden shears or a sharp, clean kitchen knife. Cut on an angle, so the stems do not rest directly at the bottom of the vase. You’ll want to trim the stems every few days.
2. Remove leaves: If you notice any foliage in the water, remove them to prevent bacterial growth. If you notice any leaves that have fallen into the water, remove them and fill your vase with fresh water.
3. The right location, the right vase: As we mentioned above, do not place your flowers near any extreme heat or cold. You’ll also want to consider the type of vase to keep flowers in. Flowers with heavier blooms (such as peonies) should be cut short and placed in a short vase to support each other. Light, more delicate blooms can be kept in a taller vase. Another good tip is to avoid overcrowding the vase – make two bouquets out of one if you notice they are cramped.
4. Change water frequently: Always use a clean vase when you get a fresh bouquet. Use room temperature water and change every 2-3 days, along with trimming the stems. If you use any flower food, make sure it is thoroughly mixed and dissolved before placing the flowers in.
